Privacy Policy

1. Who we are and what this covers

Jamnaytac LLC ("we," "us") operates instructos.org (the "Site") and the InstructOS application at app.instructos.org (the "App"), where you build and publish courses. This policy covers both.

The short version: the Site is a static publication that collects almost nothing. The App needs an account, so it holds your email address, your birth year, and the course material you write. We do not sell any of it, and we do not run advertising.

2. The Site

The Site has no user accounts, no sign-up forms, and no payment features. We do not set cookies, run analytics, or load fonts or scripts from third-party services on it. Two things reach us:

  • Server logs. The Site is hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS Amplify). Like any web host, it records standard technical information when a page is requested: IP address, browser type, the page requested, and the time. These logs are used for security and to keep the Site running, and are retained only as long as the hosting provider keeps them.
  • Email you send us. If you contact us by email, we receive your email address and whatever you write. We use it to reply to you and keep it as long as the conversation is relevant.

3. The App: what we collect

  • Account. Your email address and a password, which is stored only in hashed form by our identity provider, never by us in readable form. We send a confirmation code to your email address when you sign up and when you reset your password.
  • Your age, as a year. The App asks for your date of birth once, before an account is created. The check happens on your device and only the year is kept. The day and month are discarded and never reach us.
  • Profile. If you claim a public handle, we store it along with anything you choose to put on your public page, such as a display name, a short description, a website link, and a logo. Everything on that page is public by design.
  • What you create. The courses, lessons, mini topics, and notes you write, the edit history the App keeps so you can undo, and any files you upload as source material or branding. This is yours; see the Terms.
  • What you publish. When you publish a course, the App writes a public page for it. Anyone with the link can read it, and search engines may index it. Unpublishing takes the page down.
  • Technical logs. The same kind of standard hosting and API logs as the Site: IP address, request, and time, used for security and reliability.

The App does not ask for your name, your phone number, your location, or payment details, because it does not need them.

4. Crash reports and product analytics

The App is built to support crash reporting and a small set of product analytics events, with no session recording and no automatic capture of what you type. Neither is switched on today. If we turn either on, we will update this policy and the date at the top of this page first, and the analytics will come with a way to opt out inside the App.

5. How we use information

To create and secure your account, to store and display the work you create, to publish what you ask us to publish, to keep the Services running and safe, and to reply to messages you send us. We do not sell, rent, or share personal information with third parties for their own marketing, and we do not use it for advertising. We do not use your course material to train machine learning models.

6. Who else processes it

Amazon Web Services hosts the Site, the App, and their data (identity, database, file storage, and content delivery), in the United States. AWS processes it on our behalf, under its own security commitments, and not for its own purposes.

We may disclose information if required by law, or where we reasonably believe it is necessary to protect the rights, property, or safety of our users or others. If the Services are ever transferred to another owner, we will give notice before your information moves.

7. How long we keep it

Your account and your course material are kept for as long as your account is open. Assistant and job records that the App keeps for short-term operation expire automatically. Backups age out on a rolling schedule. When your account is deleted, your material is removed from the live Services promptly and from backups as those age out. Anything you published publicly may persist in third-party caches and search indexes that we do not control.

8. Your rights and choices

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or export personal information we hold about you, to object to or restrict how it is used, and to complain to your data protection authority. Some of this you can do yourself: edit your profile in the App, unpublish a course, and export any course as Markdown and a portable data file.

To delete your account and everything in it, or to exercise any other right, email privacy@jamnaytac.com from the address on the account. We answer within 30 days. There is no charge, and we will not treat you differently for asking.

9. Where information is held

The Services run in the United States. If you use them from elsewhere, your information is transferred to and processed there, where privacy laws may differ from your own. Using the Services means you understand that.

10. Children

The Services are for people aged 13 and over, and 16 and over in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom. The App asks for a date of birth before an account is created and refuses anyone under the minimum age, keeping nothing but the year for those it accepts. If you believe a child under the minimum age has an account, email privacy@jamnaytac.com and we will remove it.

11. Links to other sites

The Site links to www.ecollective.org, which is operated separately and has its own privacy policy. Courses published with InstructOS may link to or embed material from other sites, such as a video host; opening that material lets the other site see your request. This policy does not cover them.

12. Changes

If what we collect or how we use it changes, this policy will be updated first and the date at the top of the page will change. For a material change we will also give notice in the App or by email.
